Question

How can I auto rename my references designators in PCB Editor and then annotate the updates back to Capture?

Solution

Before you begin updating your reference designators, be sure to create back up copies of both your PCB Editor and Capture project files.

  1. Open your design in PCB Editor and select the menu items: Manufacture > Auto Rename Refdes > Rename. Your selection opens the Rename RefDes dialog.

  2. Click the Setup button to open the Rename Ref Des Setup dialog.

  3. Deselect the values entered in the Top Layer Identifier and Bottom Layer Identifier.
  4. Select the check box for Preserve current prefixes.
  5. Close the Rename Ref Des Set Up dialog and return to the Rename RefDes dialog.

  6. Click the Rename and OK buttons to save your settings and close the dialog.

  7. Select the menu items Export > Back Annotation Netlist.

  8. Select the radio option: Design entry CIS (Capture).
  9. Click the OK button.
  10. Open Capture and the desired schematic.
  11. Select the Tools > Back Annotate menu.
  12. Open the PCB Editor tab.
  13. Verify the file locations are correct.
  14. Select the check box Update Schematic.  Click the OK button.
