Update your OrCAD/Allegro licensing using the License Server Configuration Utility

Verify the configuration of the environment variable CDS_LIC_FILE

The environment variable "CDS_LIC_FILE" tells the OrCAD/Allegro software the location of your license file. When this environment variable is either missing or linked to an incorrect path, a license error is generated. If you receive a license error when you attempt to launch your OrCAD/Allegro product, verify and if necessary, update the configuration of the CDS_LIC_FILE environment variable.

To verify the configuration of the CDS_LIC_FILE environment variable:

  1. Press your keyboard Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.

  2. Enter systempropertiesadvanced in the Run dialog and click the OK button.
Or open your Control Panel > System & Security > System (or System) Advanced System Settings.

  3. Click the Environment Variables button.

  4. Review the variables list to verify the configuration of the CDS_LIC_FILE variable.  Notice variables are grouped by "User variables" and System variables."

If the required CDS_LIC_FILE is missing, add the variable to the "User variables" and "System variables" sections as described in the steps that follow.

To add a new environment variable

  1. Open the Environment Variable dialog if not already open. Click the New button in the respective dialog section.

If you are connecting a client to a license server, add the variable to the System section (bottom section). If you are running a local license service add the variable to either the System or User variables.

  2. Enter CDS_LIC_FILE as the Variable name. Enter the Variable value in the format, Port@<Hostname> where the port is 5280. You may enter either your PC <hostname> or localhost. For example: 5280@Localhost.

  3. Click the OK buttons to close the open dialogs and save the settings.

If the required CDS_LIC_FILE variable needs to be corrected, complete the following steps.

  1. Find the CDS_LIC_FILE variable in the Environment Variables dialog. Once located ensure that there is only one such variable in the "User variables" section and one such variable in the "System variables" section.

If there are multiple variables of the same name, do not delete them. Simply rename the duplicate variable to OLDCDS_LIC_FILE.

  2. Click to highlight the CDS_LIC_FILE variable and click the Edit button. Edit the variable value as necessary. Usually this is correcting an incorrect port or hostname. For example: Change the variable value from 5280@Cadence_Server to 5280@localhost.

  3. Click the OK buttons to save/apply the settings and close the Environment Variables dialog.
