Question

Although I am able to successfully launch Capture, I am unable to launch PCB Editor.

Suggested Solution

This type of error most commonly occurs when multiple versions of OrCAD are installed, such as 16.x. 17.2, and 17.4 and rely on a driver that enables users to switch from one historic version to another.

An error may occur without generating a PCB error, with the generation of a DLL error, or with PCB Editor opening but operating extremely slow. If you are experiencing one of these errors, complete the steps that follow to resolve the issue.

  1. Press your keyboard Windows key + R. This opens the Run dialog.
  2. Enter:  C:\cadence\SPB_17.X\tools\bin\allegro.exe -safe
Note: Replace the X in the 17 release to the correct version. Both 17.2 and 17.4 PCBE .exe files are in the same location in the sub folder.

If PCB Editor open, you may be able to correct the issue by renaming the “pcbenv” folder under the %HOME% dir.

  1. If this does not work then try the next command:
  2. Press the Windows key + R and type in C:\cadence\SPB_17.X\tools\bin\allegro.exe -noopengl
Note: Replace the X in the 17 release to the correct version. Both 17.2 and 17.4 PCBE .exe files are in the same location in the sub folder.
  3. If PCB Editor opens, update the graphics drivers or permanently disable it. To do so you can have them go to user preferences within PCBE and in the graphics section disable OpenGL.
